What to bring when meeting their parents

By Gift Notes · Updated November 1, 2026 · Our approach

Three quick choices

A small host gift can say thank you without making the meeting feel formal. Your partner is the best starting point: ask about tastes, household customs and anything to avoid.

Ask before choosing food or drink

Check dietary needs, ingredients and whether alcohol is welcome. A generic food hamper is not automatically a safe choice. If you cannot find out, consider a non-food option or simply a thoughtful thank-you note.

Make it easy to receive

Bring something that can be set aside. Avoid flowers that immediately need arranging or food that requires the host to change the menu. A modest gift for later is often easier than a contribution that needs attention right now.

Let your partner guide the tone

Families differ. Some enjoy exchanging gifts; others prefer a casual first meeting. Check what would feel comfortable instead of following a rigid rule about what parents expect.

What to say

“Thank you for having me. I brought a little something for you to enjoy.” There is no need to mention the price or explain how much effort it took.
