Should you bring a gift on a first date?

Three quick choices

You do not need a gift to make a good first impression. If you would like to bring one, keep it modest, easy to carry and linked to something you already know about the other person.

Start with the conversation

A small notebook makes more sense for someone who mentioned writing than an expensive item chosen only to impress. A favorite snack can feel considerate when you know their preferences. If you are unsure, arriving on time and being attentive may be the better gesture.

Think about the whole evening

Will you be walking, taking public transport or going somewhere with no place to leave a gift? Avoid fragile, bulky or messy items. Flowers are lovely for some people, but can become something to carry all evening.

Keep the pressure low

Choose an amount you are comfortable spending without expecting anything in return. Save highly personal, expensive or romantic keepsakes for a relationship where that level of intimacy feels mutual.

What to say

“You mentioned this the other day, so I thought you might like it.” A brief explanation is enough. Let the conversation move on naturally.
